Black Barn

Zeeland, the Netherlands, 2022

Located on a monumental estate in Zeeland, this workshop for a furniture maker is inspired by the historical architecture typical of the area. The building consists of spaces for woodworking, machinery, and storage. The new structure is built on the foundations of an old and derelict shed. Following a long tradition of wooden structures finished in black wood, Black Barn interprets this local typology in a contemporary way. Simple and minimalist detailing creates a contemporary architecture that is rooted in its context and history through its materiality and shape. Big openings on the sides of the linear volume provide vast views over the estate.
